Water Safety
Swimming is one of the most important life skills a child can learn. Beyond confidence and athletic ability, swim lessons provide something even more valuable, which is safety around water.
At Protea Swim Company, our learn-to-swim program focuses first on water safety, helping children develop the skills needed to stay calm, float, and recover if they unexpectedly enter the water. Families across Marin County, including Mill Valley, Corte Madera, San Rafael, Tiburon and Belvedere, choose our program because it combines structured skill development with individualized attention in a safe, supportive environment.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children. Research published by the National Institutes of Health shows that participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning in children ages 1 to 4 by up to 88 percent. Early swim instruction helps children learn essential survival skills such as floating on their back, rolling from face down to face up, reaching the wall, and exiting the pool safely. While supervision and pool barriers are always essential, swim lessons provide an important additional layer of protection.
Many children can begin water introduction as early as six months old through parent-in-water lessons that focus on comfort and trust. By ages two to four, most children are ready to begin developing more independent water skills such as floating, kicking, and swimming short distances. Every child learns at a different pace, which is why our instructors focus on building comfort first and allowing swimmers to progress naturally while developing strong fundamentals.
Our learn-to-swim progression begins with water comfort and confidence, followed by floating and recovery skills that teach children to breathe and remain calm in the water. From there swimmers develop coordinated kicking, arm movement, and breath control before progressing toward independent swimming and the foundations of freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. This structured progression helps children develop true water competence rather than simply moving through the water.
Swimming is more than a recreational activity. It is a lifelong skill that gives children confidence, independence, and safety around water. With the right instruction and environment, even very young swimmers can develop the comfort and awareness needed to enjoy the water safely.
If you are interested in learn-to-swim lessons in Marin, Protea Swim Company would be happy to help your child get started. Whether your swimmer is entering the water for the first time or building toward stronger strokes, our program focuses on developing confident swimmers one step at a time.
